About Our Pear Trees

Pear Tree Sizes: There is variability in the tree sizes, but they are generally a ¾” caliper minimum with light to moderate branching (feathering) unless noted. Height is usually at least 5′, but often over 7′.

Pollination

Pears do require an additional pear tree of a different variety for pollination. The pears available here will work for each other. See the special note for Luscious, however.

Golden Spice

Very cold hardy. Yellow fruit lightly blushed with dull red. Best for canning and spicing, fair for fresh eating.

Luscsious is a 1973 introduction from South Dakota. This is an excellent dessert pear for the northern Great Plains. Small to medium sized bright yellow fruit. Beautiful red fall foliage.

Large, yellow bronze fruit that is fine-grained, tender and juicy. Vigorous growth habit. A 1934 University of MN introduction that is also a popular pollinator.

Flemish Beauty

Cold hardy Belgian pear. It is a self-pollinator although yields are increase with another pear present. Distinct musky sweet flavor. Firm, juicy flesh that is slightly granular. An excellent fresh eating or canning pear.

Very cold hardy pear, free of fireblight. A good annual-bearer. 2 month storage.

Tawara Asian Pear

Unusualy dark tan fruit. Tastes like a cross between and apple and pear. Crisp. This is the most cold hardy of Asian pears.

Good for eating and canning. Fruit is generally 2′ in diameter. Fruit is green-yellow and very juicy.

Juicy Jewel Asian Pear (sold out for 2024)

The first Asian pear developed by the University of Minnesota. This tree does require another pear tree of a different variety for a pollenizer. Sweet, crisp fruit with a mild tropical flavor. Does not need additional ripening once it is picked. Stores well for up to three months! We are excited about this one!

Harrowcrisp

Mild, sweet fruit. The pear can be picked over a period of a couple weeks. Yellow skin with red blush. Very good fresh eating pear. Pollenate with any of the other pears listed.
